 Argon is used as a protective shield gas in orbital TIG and MIG welding processes used to join stainless steel, aluminum and titanium. The argon flows through the interior of the tubing during welding to protect the electrode and weld pool against the oxidizing effects of air. Pure argon is necessary to purge the interior weld zone to assure smooth welded surfaces and prevent oxidation and discolorization on the weld joint.
